RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It's graduation season, and not only will those recent grads be looking for work, many will be leaving mom and dad's cell phone plan and getting one of their own. Before you make the leap, there are some things you need to keep in mind.
Jake Anthony, with AT&T says graduation is always a busy time. We wanted to know his advice on making the switch. "Well I am sure the graduates want me to say stay on the family plan and the parents would love to see them leave the plan. It really comes down to the situation," he tells us.
Of course, it all boils down to the money. With mom and dad no longer paying the bill, students will have to keep track of their phone usage and find a plan that works. "They are really no different than any other consumer. When they are going to shop for wireless service, they need to ask themselves a couple of questions, how do you plan on using that phone and what is your budget," Anthony explains.
To help find what works for you, phone companies like AT&T have resources like online data calculators that allow you to figure out your potential monthly charges. "We can go in and we can help identify by number of emails, web pages, and social media usage about the approximate data usage that will have," Anthony says.
There are so many plans, so many price points and yes, you have do your home work to find that right fit. Anthony says the major thing to keep in mind is how much data you think you'll use. "Never under estimate how you are going to use your wireless phone. I challenge our customers to be inquisitive on new products and services that are out there. It's not just your standard voice phone anymore," Anthony explains.
A pre-paid card may also be a good option to start with. If this all seems a bit overwhelming, the experts recommend just stopping by your local phone store and asking lots of questions.
