Henrico Police are no longer searching for a missing 11-year-old after finding the body of a young black male in a pool at The Shannon Townhomes.
"I just didn't know what to think," said Frederick "Fred" Fitzgerald Jr.'s friend Malachi Minor. "It wasn't fair."
Henrico Fire Crews found the body of a young boy in the pool around 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say this is in the same place Fitzgerald went missing Saturday night.
They're not confirming the body they found is Fitzgerald, but they did say they are no longer searching for the 11-year-old.
Between tears, Minor said he and Fitzgerald used to play basketball together.
"My mom told me when I walked over here that they had found him in the pool, and I just didn't know what to say," Minor added.
Police tell us this pool has been blocked off since 11:00 p.m. Saturday. Neighbors say parents are supposed to supervise children anytime they're at the pool, but they say that doesn't always happen.
"We would just stay in that area because we all knew he couldn't swim so we just stayed with him," Minor noted.
Minor is still coming to terms with what happened, and Fitzgerald's family is asking for privacy. Despite this tragedy, Minor will always remember why they became friends in the first place.
"He was funny and talented," said Minor. "He made all of us laugh a lot. He was a very fun, cool person."
Police say it will take up to 24 hours to positively identify the body. Fitzgerald was last seen in the 600 block of Windomere Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
