Henrico Police are investigating a fatal single vehicle crash in the West End. One of the victims was a University of Richmond senior.
Police tell us around 2:25 a.m. Saturday they responded to an accident on Westham Parkway near Pinetree Road. They say the driver of a 2014 Mazda sedan was speeding, lost control, and struck a tree in the median.
Warren Kraft and Michael Marks, both 22-years old, were ejected from the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person went for help and has serious injuries, but they are not believed to life threatening. Warren Kraft was scheduled to graduate from U of R in August.
Jim McCarty has lived in the Westham neighborhood for more than 30 years. He and other neighbors agree speeding is a big problem especially around the site of the crash. There's a bend in the road near Westham Parkway and Pinetree road.
"My wife and I both - our hearts beat and we're in pain," said McCarty. "There's no reason for it. We have called it 'Westham Speedway' our whole lives."
McCarty says he even lost a good friend who wrecked near this same median years ago.
"I could count the names of the people I know who have seriously injured themselves or have lost their lives on this road simply by just driving too fast," McCarty added.
Police confirm the car was not going the posted speed limit of 30 MPH, but McCarty says most never do.
"The bottom line is - just slow down when you drive down Westham parkway please for the sake of our children and our neighbors," McCarty noted.
Anyone that may have witnessed the crash or that may have information regarding this crash is asked to call Henrico Police at 804-501-5000.
