Plan for more homes on Springfield Rd. moves forward

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Plans are moving forward for more housing in western Henrico. This affects an 11-acre site off Springfield Road in the Echo Lake area. Neighbors say they're in favor of more housing, but they say the problem is Springfield Road.

Right now it's all trees but the planning commission wants to rezone the area for a housing development.

"Building the houses I don't have a problem with that," said Michael Jackson, a concerned neighbor. "It's the traffic. If they can deal with the traffic first, [then] I really don't have a problem with that."

The piece of land the county wants to develop is near the intersection of Springfield and Wintergreen roads. It's close to a S-curve that's been a constant cause of concern for neighbors and VDOT. That's because a number have accidents have happened here and there are plans to revamp the area. Neighbors tell NBC12 changes to the road need to happen before more homes go up. Parents here are concerned for their children's safety.

"Even on the curve I've seen sometimes people they drive like crazy," said Misghina Moszghi who has two daughters that go to Echo Lake Elementary School.

If the plans are approved 16 homes would be built, but the planning commission says most of the wetlands would remain untouched.

The Henrico Planning Department says the housing project is still in its very early stages. But right now, they're estimating about 78 more vehicles would be coming out of the neighborhood onto Springfield Road.

They also estimate, it would bring about 11 more elementary school children to Echo Lake which could put the school over capacity. All things the planning department says the county is taking seriously as they move forward.

It's still quite a process before this whole project can be approved. The next step is for the zoning plans to go before the Board of Supervisors.

VDOT says they have gathered all of the community input on what to do about Springfield Road. They say they will be meeting with county leaders soon to come up with a plan.
