A 4-year-old boy was killed and his father injured by a falling tree at Richmond's Maymont Park Thursday.
Richmond Police say a very large, mature tree was uprooted and fell on the child around 2:00 p.m. Paramedics tried to administer aid to the child, but he died at the scene. His father suffered non-life-threatening injuries
The tree came down behind the park's nature center, as strong storms were making their way into the area. Police say the park was being evacuated at the time of the accident.
Officers are still investigating the death and haven't yet released any information identifying the child. Police say they boy and his father were part of a small group at the park.
Several friends and members of the boy's family were at the park when the incident happened. Members of the church where the child attended have been making their way to the scene to pray with the family.
The Maymont Foundation expressed its deep sadness in a statement.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victims. Maymont Foundation staff are assisting the authorities with their review of the situation. Maymont will be closed to the public until further notice," the statement said.
