Richmond SPCA asking Short Pump for space for adoption center

The Richmond SPCA wants Short Pump Town Center to make a big change. The non-profit is asking the mall to donate retail space, so the shelter can set up a permanent adoption center.

"There's so many wonderful folks right there that could provide great homes for wonderful homeless pets," said Robin Starr, CEO of the Richmond SPCA.

The mall recently announced that it is expanding and looking for the community's input for what should go here. That's when the Richmond SPCA put out a petition on Change.org asking the mall to donate retail space and become an adoption destination.

"The rate at which it has accumulated signatures has just been amazing," Starr said.

It says the high traffic area will expose animals to people who would not normally visit the shelter. If they get the space it would require some renovations like making visiting rooms and kennel space.

But there's one potential hurdle, the mall doesn't allow pets. NBC12 reached out to mall management for comment, but haven't heard back.

Across the street the Fido Park Avenue Dog Boutique owner Chris Vondriska says she supports a permanent adoption center and would like to see pets welcomed at the outdoor mall.

"There are some challenges to make that area pet friendly but I don't think it's anything that can't be overcome," she said.

The Richmond SPCA says other malls that opened up adoption sites have been successful. Now they hope this petition will send mall management the message that four legged friends should be welcome too.

Henrico County does have an animal shelter. They also work with the Richmond SPCA to get animals adopted.
