MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Martin's prescription savings card

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Frugal shoppers use loyalty cards to get discounts at grocery stores. Now there's one that can save you money at the pharmacy.

If you've ever had sticker shock when picking up your medicine, Martin's has a solution to save you some money. The store has launched its new prescription savings card for medicines insurance doesn't cover. Low-cost, fixed-price generics now fall under this program.

"It's an enhancement to our $4 and $10 generics, so now instead of getting generics for $4 and $10, we offer discounts on brand name medications as well," said Martin's pharmacy manager Tim Robertson.

Here's how it works: you ask your pharmacist for the application, fill it out and return it. Then your card is ready to use. There is a $10 fee to join, but you get that $10 back in the form of a gift card.

"Almost any brand name medication, we will give a discount for if you're enrolled in this program," said Robertson.

Including popular medicines that treat high blood pressure and cholesterol, depression and thyroid conditions.

"There's one card for the whole family - and actually, that family includes your pet," said Robertson.

These pharmacists fill a lot of prescriptions for diabetic and epileptic pets, and those medications are included in this program. The card also saves you money on other health- and wellness-related products, like flu shots and diabetes testing supplies.

"We want to make sure we're giving the best value to our patient when they come in, along with our great service," said Robertson.

This program has no age or income restrictions, but it only discounts medications that insurance does not already cover. The card is accepted at every Martin's food store in our area plus Ahold USA's sister companies throughout the east coast.
