HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A two-month-old girl who was fighting for her life since Sunday has died from her injuries.
The baby's 20-month-old brother, Jelani A. Downing-Batson, died earlier from the incident Sunday. Sources say their mother left the pair in a car for nearly eight hours while she worked at a Glen Allen hotel.
The baby girl was in the VCU Medical Center's intensive care unit for days, but died around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Brittney Downing faces two felony counts of child abuse and neglect. Police are still waiting for the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.
Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor says authorities are working on a timeline of events. Henrico police are working closely with different agencies, including Prince George Police and the Department of Social Services.
Sources say it was only Downing's third day on the job as a new housekeeper at the Comfort Suites near Virginia Center Commons. Investigators are trying to determine where she parked to determine how much direct sunlight the car received.
Depending on the outcome of this investigation, more charges could be filed.
