PG mom's roommate: We did 'best we could' to save two children's lives

Posted: Updated:

A two-month-old continues to fight for her life after a mom left her and her brother in a car for nearly eight hours while working at a Glen Allen hotel Sunday, according to sources.

The baby girl remains at VCU Medical Center in the intensive care unit, while relatives grieve the death of her 20-month-old brother who didn't survive the incident.

Brittney Downing faces two felony counts of child abuse and neglect. Her roommate and best friend recounts the moments when rescuers tried to save the little boy, and when she noticed something was wrong with the baby girl.

"We were talking to police and I looked over and I noticed her there and I told them she didn't look too good and they rushed her outside as soon as possible," said Adriana Williams. "I was shocked, and startled, so we did the best that we could at that time."

Williams is godmother to the two children and says she is working closely with police as they continue to investigate the case. Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor says authorities are working on a timeline of events.

"Anytime to see such a young, a baby perish under any circumstances is heart-wrenching which is why, again, the public needs to know we are 100 percent committed that this case gets the fullest attention possible," said Taylor.

Taylor said Henrico police are working closely with different agencies like, Prince George Police and the Department of Social Services. Sources say Downing left her two babies in the car while she worked her day shift as a new housekeeper.

Family members say it was only Downing's third day on the job at the Comfort Suites near Virginia Center Commons and right now investigators are trying to figure out where she parked the car with the kids inside because they're trying to determine how much direct sunlight the car received and how hot it got in her vehicle.

Depending on the outcome of this investigation even more charges could be filed against Downing.
