RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - In this week's Politifact Virginia report, Democrat Terry McAuliffe is hoping to make education a key plank in his bid for governor. He thinks the state needs to work harder in luring new teachers because the current crop of educators is aging.
"Of our 98,000 teachers who are K-12, over 53,000 of those teachers today are over 50 years old," said McAuliffe.
Is that true? Are that many Virginia teachers 50 years old and older? According to Politifact Virginia, that claim is false. Sean Gorman says McAuliffe is mixing his statistics up.
"That actually works out to about 34 percent of instructional staff in the state being 50 years or older, but still, again, that's far off from McAuliffe's claim that more than half of the teachers in the state are age 50 or older, have crossed over that age threshold," said Gorman.
