NBC12 VIEWPOINT: Tornado Preparedness

The devastating tornado which hit Moore County in Oklahoma this week was another reminder of the power and fury of Mother Nature. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, many of whom suffered injuries, lost their lives, and their homes. But from the many stories we have seen and heard we know that their spirit is not lost.

Thank you to those of you who have donated to help the survivors and for those of you would like to give you can do so by going to Redcross.org.

This devastating tornado also reminds us that although we do not live in tornado alley, the ever changing laws of nature have clearly shown that we cannot predict with certainty the severity of tornados that can hit Central Virginia.

The best defense against protecting yourself in the event of a tornado is knowledge and a plan. You, your family and the organization you work for, need to have a plan in the event of an emergency. A plan will avoid panic, disorganization and potentially save lives.

Please go to the FEMA site Ready.gov and click on Preparedness. Take the pledge and be prepared. When you hear that a tornado is on its way, you have less time to seek shelter than you think.
