RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Do you have travel plans this Memorial Day weekend? Richmond Police want you to schedule a date with them first. There were nearly a dozen home burglaries this past weekend in Richmond.

Police say they expect even more break-ins this coming holiday weekend. Richmond Police walked the St. John's Woods neighborhood Monday afternoon. Police went door to door talking to neighbors ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

"We've had a small spike in robberies," said Lt. John Garcia. "We are trying to get out ahead of it."

The spike in robberies is not isolated to St. John's Woods. Police are warning as the temperatures go up so do the robberies.

"It's a prime time for vacations," said Captain John Hall. "You've got more juveniles that are out and about. Yes. We do see an uptick of some things."

Richmond Police will watch your home or business while you're away this holiday weekend. Just fill out a Home/Business Vacation Watch Request form and drop it by your precinct.

"The bad guys know when we go on vacation," said Charlie Diradour who is chairman of the Fan District safety committee. "They take advantage of it."

Diradour is encouraging neighbors to sign up for the home watch program.

"You can have an extra set of eyes with a badge on his or her chest," said Diradour.

The program is free. The form is available here:
