A federal jury in Richmond found an MS-13 gang leader guilty of all charges in the murder of a man as part of a gang initiation at Pony Pasture.

Jose Bran will be sentenced in August on five counts stemming from the murder of Osbin Hernandez-Gonzales in the summer of 2011 and from an attack on another suspected gang member, who was stabbed 14 times. Two of the five counts could carry a life sentence.

Bran was convicted of ordering both attacks. The victim of the stabbing survived and identified his attackers. According to court records, they then turned on Bran.

Prosecutors call the local group of MS-13, the "sailors set," an "illegal, amoral and satanic gang." They left jurors with those words just before deliberations began Friday afternoon. Assistant U.S. Attorney Roderick C. Young said a guilty verdict would hopefully put an end to the brutality.

Defense attorneys couldn't prove Bran was not the leader of the local MS-13 set, nor could they prove he didn't order the violence and wasn't at either scene when the crimes took place.
