Man in serious condition following a James City crash

A man is in serious condition at VCU Medical Center after he was dragged by another car for four miles in New Kent County.

James City County Police say two cars were racing each other on Richmond Road, when the driver of a 1997 VW sedan lost control near James City Recycling.

The car hydroplaned and spun several times before hitting a tree. The driver was thrown from the car. The second car, a 1995 Honda sedan, ran over the first driver and didn't know it until another driver in New Kent County told him there was a body under his car.

The first driver was taken to VCU Medical Center for serious injuries. There were also two 8-year-old children in this car that were hurt. Officials say their injuries are non-life threatening. They also don't know what their relation to the driver is.

The second driver said he was racing with the first driver and saw the car hit a tree. He also thought he ran over car debris, not a body.

Police say speed and road conditions are a factor in this accident. No charges have been filed at this time. Police are not identifying either driver at this time.

The accident is under investigation.
