Prince George County police are searching for a man, who they say could be armed. Family members of Victor Starr, 35, fear he could take his own life.
Starr has a checkered past with the law. However, authorities are focused on finding him safely.
Prince George County police and Virginia State Police embarked on an intense search for at least seven hours Sunday. Local police say Starr's wife called authorities just before 11 a.m., after a gunshot went off. Neighbors say the couple is estranged, but trying to resolve their issues.
Next-door neighbor Tracey Duncan says she spoke to Starr's wife after the gunshot fired. Duncan says the woman said her husband threatened to kill himself, rather than go to jail.
"…He fired a gun in the air this morning, and she freaked out and called police," said Duncan.
Prince George County and VSP blocked off Millpond Road from about 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., not allowing even residents returning home to enter. Authorities released the following message online, and through text message: "Avoid the Millpond Rd area due to police activity in the area. We are asking citizens to stay inside your residence."
Dozens of officers and K-9 units searched for Starr, to no avail. Duncan waited for six hours to be permitted back into her home, with two children waiting.
"Scared… I want to go home," continued Duncan as she waited.
The Progress-Index reports that Starr was convicted of a slew of charges, including breaking and entering, after a fire at a Dinwiddie drug store, in 2001.
Police haven't said whether Starr is facing any current charges, right now."At this point, we're concerned about his safety and his well-being. We're just trying to ascertain his whereabouts, and make sure he is safe," said Prince George County Police Lt. Paul Burroughs.
Police describe Starr as dealing with depression. Starr's Facebook page says he served in the Navy. His last post was a somber one, reading, "Man, I'm just done with it all. You get to a point in life when it seems the mountain you're climbing never ends."
Police aren't certain whether Starr is armed or not. Starr is described as being 5'8", approximately 185 lbs., and was last seen wearing a white shirt and green and blue- striped shorts. Investigators ask anyone who may have seen Starr, or who knows where he is, to call Prince George County police at 804-733-2770.
