Chesterfield mom killed in hit-and-run: Family speaks

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A young mother is dead, and her mom is begging for help to find the driver she says hit her daughter.

Police say 19-year-old, Elizabeth Nikki West, was hit and killed near the intersection of Turner Road and Walmsely Boulevard around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Her friends call her Nikki.

She left behind her seven-month old baby boy. Police tell us they are looking for the person who hit her.

Nikki's mother has a message for the driver. Brenda West was in Virginia Beach when police delivered the news that her only daughter was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

"I honesty, for the first 10 seconds of my life, I thought it was a bad dream but I wasn't waking up and I said this is real," noted West. "We just threw everything in the car and drove straight back to here."

West says Nikki was a loving sister, mother and friend – and she can't bear the thought of Nikki missing her first Mother's Day with her seven-month-old son, Lucas.

"She was talking about what she wanted to do to spend with her son," West added. "She had made plans and now there are no plans - no nothing."

According to West, Nikki left the house around 1:00 in the morning to get some fresh air. She was hit while walking on Turner Road near Walmsley Boulevard - just a stone's throw from her home. A small memorial is already set up at the intersection honoring her. West says she has one message for the driver.

"I hope that you will have the courage to turn yourself in because this can happen to you, a loved one of yours, and you would want to know - or just closure for this - why you left," West said. "You wouldn't want someone to leave your child on the side of the road."

West feels it's something she must do to seek justice for her daughter. She's getting through this terrible time thanks to the loving support from friends and family.

"It's really awesome for everybody to have helped so much," West added. "It's a tragedy what happened. I just want to know why they left."

West will keep fighting for her daughter until she finds some answers. Her mom tells NBC12 Nikki had goals to join the military in October.
