Credit card thieves are on the prowl in Central Virginia. Deputies need your help finding a trio-of thieves who stole from a Hanover County woman - racking up thousands of dollars on her card.
According to investigators, two men and a woman targeted the woman while she was eating at a restaurant on Bell Creek road in Hanover County. She hung her purse over her chair like we all do. Somehow they were able to yank the wallet right out of her bag without her even knowing.
Once the suspects got a hold of the woman's wallet, they racked up a huge bill at four Richmond-area stores ranging from short pump to downtown. They include electronic and clothing stores – even a pharmacy.
"As with any of these cases, it can be a matter of minutes before someone can do a lot of damage to a stolen credit card," said Sgt. Chris Whitley with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
Two men and one woman are responsible for the spree. A store manager at DTLR on West Broad Street says those surveillance images were from inside her store. News of this brazen crime has Hanover County neighbor and grandmother Penny Smith keeping a much closer eye on her purse.
"Well I keep my purse closed," said Smith. "I keep it on my shoulder or I keep it on my stroller and I don't walk off from it."
If anything, Sgt. Whitley says this is a reminder to always keep an eye on your purse whether you're at a restaurant or shopping in the grocery store.
"Although Hanover County is a very safe place, there was an easy opportunity for them to steal the victim wallet and victimize her," said Whitley.
It's always a good idea to become familiar with your bank and credit card policies. They may not always cover all expenses if you become a victim of credit card theft. If you can help investigators, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
