Henrico investigators revealed Thursday at least two suspects somehow managed to clean out drop-boxes, full of rent payments, from the outside.
The incidents affected multiple apartment complexes in the 9300–9500 block of West Broad St. April 5-6. Police said the thieves also hit apartments 20 miles away, on the 400 block of North Airport Drive.
Culpepper Farms and Hickory Creek apartments on West Broad were among the developments targeted. In an interview Thursday, Culpepper management said the suspects were also after money orders, and the complex drop-box has been secured.
"We made changes to our drop-box so that once the checks go in, there's no way the envelopes can come out," a manager said. "We're working with the people affected, and they won't be penalized."
Police did not reveal a dollar amount of the checks stolen. Culpepper employees also said the thieves were smart enough to strike April 5, when the deposit box was full of checks.
"That was the day before late fees would kick in," the employee said.
Henrico County Police is seeking the public's assistance in identifying and locating the subjects responsible for this crime. Anyone with information regarding this offense is asked to contact Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
