SUFFOLK, VA (WWBT) -

Two people were killed when a plane went down in Suffolk, Saturday afternoon.

The experimental craft crashed at approximately 1:01 p.m. near the Southside Trailer Park on Turlington Road, killing both men on board.

An initial report from a City of Suffolk spokesperson indicated the plane was heading to the Festival of Flight, about 3 miles from the crash site. However, Virginia State Police later said that was not the case.

NBC affiliate WAVY reports the aircraft had attempted to land several times before crashing.

Virginia State Police are handling the investigation. Both VSP and the FAA are on scene. The NTSB has also been notified.
