Body found at Chester recycling plant

CHESTER, VA (WWBT) - A recycling plant employee found a human body among debris at the plant in Chesterfield Friday. Investigators face more than the usual challenges -- including a search area that could include the entire state because items are received from all Virginia.

Police spent more than four hours at the site Friday but that's just the beginning.

Investigators say the body that appears to be that of an adult male is in such bad shape, identifying it could be a challenge.

An employee was making the rounds at TFC Recycling when he says he noticed a body right in the middle of parts to be recycled. He says the image left him at a loss for words.

"The body is fairly decomposed which tells us it's probably been here for a while," said Captain. Chris Hensley.

As workers showed up, many said the details just don't seem real. Latrelle Goodwyn dropped off a relative who has worked there for years.

"They have a lot of suspicious activity going on with people being found in different landfills and stuff so this really is a surprise," she said.

Police and the medical examiner were on scene for hours trying to gather leads and determine the cause of death.

"At this point, this is a suspicious death until we determine otherwise," Hensley said.

TFC's Senior Vice-President said the company's thoughts are with the victim's family and their focus is on the employees receiving the attention they need following the traumatic incident.

The company provides recycling services for some 700,000 households in Virginia and North Carolina which could make narrowing down the search for where the body came from even harder.

"It's bittersweet to come to a job site and find something that tragic," Goodwyn said.

TFC is a family operated business that is headquartered in Chesapeake. It employs more than 350 people.
