Clean up underway after Fayette County tornado

(WMC-TV) - Residents and family members living in the Belmont community in northwest Fayette County said it looks like a war zone after an EF-1 tornado ripped through the small community, tearing up an animal shelter, a historic cemetery, and an old church.

Many people in the area are now in clean up mode.

"My parents were married in this church, my mother grew up in this church and I don't know what's going to happen," said resident Ridley Clifton referring to the Belmont church that was blown 20 feet off its foundation.

The inside of the church remains intact. Family members said there are thousands of dollars worth of damage to the Belmont church and cemetery.

94-year-old Paul Rogers grew up in the Belmont community.

"I was in the war, and it looks like a war zone or worse than a war zone," he said.

Rogers said the church was established in 1848. It closed years ago.

The Belmont Cemetery Association Storm Damage Fund has been set up at the First Citizens National Bank in Oakland.
