Area pros, Daly play well in Round 1 of South GA Classic

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Pro golf has descended upon Valdosta for the web.com Tour's South Georgia Classic this weekend.

Several area pros were aiming for the top spot at Kinderlou Forest Country Club.

Josh Broadaway played well early in the round, but bogeyed two of his final four holes to fall back to even. He's tied for 62nd.

Former Darton State Cavalier and Valdosta State Blazer Brent Witcher shot a 2-under 70.

But the man many in the galleries came to see was former major champion John Daly.

The man in the loud pants caught some bad luck with a double bogey on 15, but was able to bounce back to finish 2-under.

Daly was a last minute addition to the field, but played well and Daly credits that to his fit on the course.

"I wish we had more courses like this on the regular tour where, between all the par fours and fives, you have to hit drivers on just about all of them.," Daly said after his round. "It's just cool to play a golf course like that. It reminds me of back in the early '90s when you were able to do that."

Other area notables include Sylvester's Sonny Skinner finished the day at 3-over.

Rookie Ryan Spears is alone at the top at 6-under.
