Henrico mom gets 6 months in jail for death of baby

A Henrico mother will spend six months in jail after her two-month-old son died from asphyxiation.

Jasmine Norman, 22, pleaded no contest to charges of felony child neglect. According to court testimony, she gave her baby NyQuil the night he died.

The boy was found dead with a plastic bag around his head in February 2012, according to court documents.

Under the plea agreement, Norman was sentenced to 10 years, with all but six months suspended. In addition to the six-months jail term, she won't be allowed to see her other two children for 10 years. Those children are two and three years old.

Norman has always insisted she was in another room when the incident happened. While the medical examiner determined the cause of death was asphyxiation, he couldn't tell whether the asphyxiation came from the NyQuil or the bag over the baby's head.

Prosecutors say the felony child neglect charge comes from her giving the baby NyQuil, and more serious charges weren't part of the plea agreement, because this was all prosecutors could prove.

Norman was very emotional at Thursday's court proceedings. She was handcuffed in court and taken into custody.
