Officials say there is no immediate threat of an explosion at a Chesterfield plant. This is after fire crews responded to a 2 alarm fire.
The fire appears to have started between the 4th and 5th floors of the Aleris International aluminum recycling plant on Reymet Road.
Insulation inside of the tower on top of the plant that melts aluminum flakes caught fire earlier Wednesday.
The chemicals and high heat caused structural instability of the beams inside.
Fire crews are waiting for it to burn itself out because:
• If they knock down the wall to fight the fire, fire could spread rapidly or cause explosion
• Water could cause an explosion
• Beams could collapse from the structural damage, trapping firefighters inside
A crew will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation. The incident was marked under control at 9:23 p.m.
