If you're in the market for a school bus, or a used car, a deal may be waiting in Colonial Heights. The City plans to auction off 26 vehicles, and some of them are highly unusual.
An orange, Ford utility truck from the 1960s sits next to three decommissioned police cars. A 2001 Cadillac Deville will go on the auction block with an industrial-grade dump truck, sending all proceeds to the City's general fund.
"This is the most number of vehicles we've ever had in one of our auctions," said Larry Melvin, purchasing agent for Colonial Heights. "We've never had anywhere close to this number of vehicles."
The May 8 auction will also sell surplus computers and office furniture. In an interview Wednesday, Melvin said all of the vehicles are ready to hit the road.
"You'd be surprised with how many people come out and with the price of new cars these days," Melvin said. ," Melvin said. "Our auctioneer, Paul Cerny, has a following. So we're expecting good turnout on the eighth."
The vehicle auction starts at 12:00 p.m. at the City of Colonial Heights Garage, located at 501 Lake Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. The inventory list can be viewed here (Vehicle Inventory List for Auction)
The auction for office furniture, equipment, and computer parts starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Colonial Heights School Maintenance Building, 2600 Woodlawn Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
