Hanover teacher discovers bomb threat at Chickahominy Middle

A bomb threat was found Friday on a student's desk at Chickahominy Middle School in Hanover. Investigators don't believe the threat is credible, but a letter was sent to parents to let them know what had happened.

Hanover dad Greg Mack said he appreciates the school keeping him in the loop. He's also grateful for the teacher's watchful eye.

"The schools really keep you informed about what's going on," said Mack. "I think it's a good thing, because we have become really complacent."

State and local police are on heightened alert in the wake of the tragedies in Boston and Connecticut. Investigators say, that's because the public is more sensitive to their surroundings.

The Richmond Police Department has investigated at least three suspicious packages in less than a week. A backpack shut down the Richmond Convention Center last Tuesday. A flower pot caused investigators to close Broad and 14th streets Wednesday.

In Henrico, an unattended backpack forced the evacuation of the food court at Short Pump Town Center Friday Night.

Students in King William County will go through extra security checks Tuesday morning after a death threat was found at the school last week.

"We would much rather have them contact police," said Major Steve Drew with the Richmond Police Department. "We'd rather have our bomb squad respond and look at it rather than thinking it's nothing, letting it go then we find out later we're responding to a critical situation."

Major Drew says soon, public concern will taper off but he urges folks to stay aware. If you see something suspicious, no matter how small, report it to police.
