1 body found, search resumes for other missing VSU student

While the family of one Virginia State University student grieves, another continues to hold onto hope their loved one will return home.

Search team divers found one of their bodies Monday afternoon, about 400 yards from where the freshman were last spotted in the Appomattox river. The body has been taken to the medical examiner's office for positive identification. The other victim has yet to be recovered.

The dive search was suspended at about 6 p.m. Monday evening. The scuba team will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities haven't yet revealed the identity of which student was found, Marvell Edmondson or Juawan Holmes. Friends say both freshmen were crossing the river with five other students, early Saturday morning, as part of a hazing ritual.

Meantime, emotions ran high among those students who knew the victims.

"We have at least twenty people out there searching," said Donnell Jefferson, a friend of the victims, Monday afternoon. Jefferson's dorm room is next to Edmondson.

"I'm just trying to stay strong and pray," said Jasmine Long. Long says her good friend was in a relationship with Holmes.

Chesterfield Police confirmed Monday that Edmondson is from Portsmouth and Holmes is from Williamsburg.

The two were last seen near the MLK Bridge, between downtown Petersburg and Colonial Heights, around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Two days of searching by air and boat turned up nothing. The search is difficult because of a swift current, and the water level, which is at its highest in months.

Lake Chesdin is nearly 100 percent full, and it empties into the Appomattox River. Friday's rainfall also sent more water into the Appomattox.

VSU also says there will be counseling sessions for students starting at 9 a.m. at Foster Hall.
