For the first time, the captain of the two Richmond Police officers who were shot over the weekend is speaking out.
The gunfire happened Saturday on Rusk Avenue and sparked a stand-off that ended with a murder-suicide.
Police say Christina Squire was killed, gunned down by Clarence Taylor II.
For the neighborhood in southside Richmond had to be evacuated, because the welfare check had turned deadly.
"It's a terribly traumatic time," said Captain Harvey Powers. "They almost immediately came under fire."
When the two officers entered the home, police say Taylor started firing.
Captain Powers said the injured officers have a lot of experience. One is a sergeant who has been on the force for 23 years, the other an officer with seven years on the job.
He wouldn't talk about the extent of their injuries but said both men are going to be okay.
"It also speaks very highly of a supervisor that he's part of the team risking life and limb to do the welfare check, that he goes in with his people to make sure it's done right," he said.
He says training for potentially deadly situations gets better every year. The last time the police department went through something like this was ten years ago. Officer Douglas Wendel, who was also from the Second Precinct, was gunned down while confronting a suspected drug dealer. He did not survive. His photo hangs in the hallway.
"Any day that you put on the badge, any day that you put on the uniform, any event, any circumstance can lead to a deadly force encounter," said Powers.
But the captain says while they are thankful the officers survived, but they are saddened the victim, Christina Squire did not. Her boyfriend, Taylor, is the accused gunman. Police say he took his own life.
Right now the medical examiner is trying to determine when Squire was actually killed. Family members say she leaves behind two children.
Captain Powers says the department is thankful to the fire and EMS crews who got the officers to the hospital so quickly.
