(RNN) – Canadian Royal Mounted Police announced the arrest of two people in a suspected terror plot to blow up a Canadian passenger train.
Neither the arrests nor the plot are connected to the bombings in Boston.
The two suspects, who have ties to al Qaida, were arrested on April 22 in Ontario and Quebec.
Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto, are charged with conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack against a Via Rail passenger train. The two men are not Canadian citizens.
At a news conference that began a little after 3:30 p.m. ET Monday, an official announced the suspects have been under surveillance for more than a year.
The RCMP says there was no eminent threat against passengers, trains or infrastructure.
