Who's the man on the roof near the Boston Marathon bombing?

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Scam artists and conspiracy theorists are out and taking advantage of the tragedy in Boston.

The spread of misinformation makes it hard to know what to believe. For example, a picture of a man on a roof near the blast site has many wondering if he's a suspect. So far, no one knows for sure, but there's no evidence the explosives were detonated from a rooftop and it seems likely spectators would want to take in a view of the finish line from above.

Another picture making the rounds shows a woman, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, who was principal at Sandy Hook Elementary. She was killed in the shootings, but the picture shows her in the marathon blast coverage. It appears it is either photo manipulation or a mixed up photo on-air.

There's also been a picture which is purportedly of a girl who was a Sandy Hook survivor, claiming she was killed in the Boston blast. While an 8-year-old was killed, we now know it was Martin Richard and that the girl in the photo was actually running in a 5k in Northern Virginia.

Facebook pages that look like they were from before the bombing are also likely false. Facebook let's you set any date you want for pictures or even when a page was formed.

The best advice is not to share anything online unless you know it's true.
