Dawn Staley, Shelley Smith receive new contracts from USC

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Head women's basketball coach Dawn Staley and women's soccer coach Shelley Smith received a pair of new contracts from the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees Tuesday.

The Board of Trustees approved a three-year extension for Staley, who is just coming off a second NCAA women's basketball tournament appearance, and Smith received a four-year extension.

As part of her extension, Staley will also receive a $125,000 raise, bumping her pay up to $850,000 by the end of her contract.

Staley's extension also comes off the heels of her spurning a potential gig with Ohio State University.

The Buckeyes interviewed Staley back at the end of March, but she quickly withdrew her name from consideration.

"I want to thank Ray Tanner, President Pastides and the Board of Trustees for this contract extension," said Staley in a university statement. "Our goal is to build a national championship caliber program that represents the University of South Carolina with distinction both on the court and in the classroom. I believe we have set the foundation for that success here and I am excited to a part of building on that for years to come."

With that new contract, Staley is now in Columbia through the 2018-19 basketball season.
