Part of I-85 may be named after Master Trooper Walker

DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) -

Dinwiddie County Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of renaming part of Interstate 85 in honor of fallen Virginia State Police Master Trooper Junius Walker.

The proposal would rename a 13.5 mile stretch of the Interstate, from Route 703 to the Brunswick County line. The section of I-85 would be officially known as the Master Trooper Junius Alvin Walker Memorial Highway.

"Not only was this the interstate where Trooper Walker lost his life, it's also between his home and where he was born in Brunswick County," said Dinwiddie County Administrator Kevin Massengill. "I think [Walker] will be forever recognized, and those from Southside Virginia who drive by will take a moment and reflect on the life that this man lived."

For Massengill, the renaming is personal. Since he was six years old, the County Administrator knew the fallen master trooper. Massengill's father was once superintendent of the Virginia State Police, and served as Walker's first sergeant.

Walker died while on I-85 on March 7, when he was shot after pulling over to help a man on the side of the highway.

The renaming is expected to achieve final approval from the Commonwealth Transportation Board as early as May.
