Fan District pushing for more lighting after string of robberies

A string of weekend armed robberies in the fan has the community association demanding action. Crooks hit unsuspecting neighbors along Allen, Grace, Grove and Monument Avenues.

"we are urging people in the fan...please," said Charlie Diradour who is chairman of the Fan district association safety committee. "If you are walking at night...please walk in a group."

Three men are accused of robbing two men at gunpoint on the 1600 block of Monument Avenue. A juvenile is now behind bars in connection to that robbery. Three friends say three unknown men robbed two of them and try to rob a third on the 1600 block West Grace .

The Fan association wants the city to fund a new fan district lighting plan that would shed more light on what can be a dark neighborhood.

"Some of these instances would not occur if in fact that lighting plan was in place now," said Diradour.

Law enforcement is tight lipped as they work to catch at least two more suspects.

"The investigation into those instances is still ongoing," said Lt. Edward Capriglione. "I will say this, especially in the area where we had these incidents occur this weekend, there is heightened police presence from both the Richmond Police departments and the VCU police."

As police investigate the fan association hopes the city sees the light.

"Lets get the plan in place," said Diradour.

We are told there is money in the city budget for more Fan lighting. The question is how much money. The budget will not be finalized for several weeks.
