Community demands end to violence after student shot at bus stop

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The death last week of a 17-year-old Nashville high school student allegedly at the hands of another teenager is prompting a call for an end to youth gun violence.

Police believe Eric Goodner, 17, shot Johnathan Johnson while Johnson was waiting for the school bus near his home.

Goodner remains on the run nearly one week later, and community leaders Tuesday demanded an end to all the violence.

"We've lost two, and countless other people are in pain and hurt, and some others some others may be thinking about revenge. If you respect Johnathan's life, respect your own and respect the lives of others. Try love," said the Rev. Vance P. Ross, senior pastor at Gordon Memorial Church.

Mayor Karl Dean joined police officials at a vigil organized to end the violence and expressed his sorrow for the family of the victim. Dean also thanked the police and community for doing everything they can in searching for Goodner.

The Rev. Larry Rayford, associate minister at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, said he's attended 15 funerals in the last month for young people between the ages of 12 and 21.

"We're begging and pleading for people to stop the violence. And we're asking the young man who did this to turn himself in. There is already one life gone," Rayford said.

Metro police released an updated photo of Goodner and asked for the public's help in finding him. They say he should be considered armed and dangerous and suspect someone may be hiding him.

A public visitation for Johnson is set for Wednesday at the Lewis and Wright Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
