Chesterfield residents praise firefighter response to major brush fire

Chesterfield firefighters battled hot spots late into the evening Wednesday after a significant and fast moving brush fire threatened homes along Courthouse Road.

"I know we were the closest house to it," said homeowner Carol Clodfelter. "So we would be the first to go."

The brush fire shut down Route 288 in both directions between Ironbridge Road and Hull Street Road for most of the evening. 75 acres were impacted by the brush fire.

Two fires merged into one near the 8400 block of Courthouse Road. The location isn't far from Camp Thunderbird, a YMCA campground. Helicopters dropped water on the flames from above. The fire was in the Route 288 median.

"I appreciate the firefighters," said Charles Clodfelter. "They did a real good job. I know this type of fire can simmer down and flare up. I will rest a whole lot better tonight knowing they will be around."

No homes were threatened, but there was heavy smoke in the area. Wind gusts, dry conditions and low humidity complicated the fast-moving fire. The intense flames kept more than 25 fire units and 70 firefighters busy for several hours Wednesday.

"We had a few homes that are on Courthouse Road that we were able to put our units at to keep the fire away from them," said Chesterfield Fire Lt. Jason Elmore.
