CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Just in: All north/south lanes on Route 288 and Courthouse Road have now reopened.

A brush fire had Route 288 shut down in both directions between Ironbridge Road and Hull Street Road for most of the evening. 75 acres were impacted by the brush fire.

Two fires merged into one near the 8400 block of Courthouse Road. The location isn't far from Camp Thunderbird, a YMCA campground. Helicopters dropped water on the flames from above. The fire was in the Route 288 median.

No homes were threatened, but there was heavy smoke in the area. Wind gusts, dry conditions and low humidity complicated the fast-moving fire.

"We had a few homes that are on Courthouse Road that we were able to put our units at to keep the fire away from them," said Chesterfield Fire Lt. Jason Elmore.
