Police just released a list of Henrico's most dangerous intersections. According to traffic engineers, some areas will be seeing improvements - but others will not, at least not anytime soon.
At the busy intersection of Nine Mile Road and Laburnum Avenue, the amount of traffic is quickly becoming a problem. Henrico Police ranked this intersection as the most accident prone for eastern Henrico - with 37 crashes last year.
Jackie Taylor has seen the aftermath of some of those accidents.
"I really wish there was something we could do about it," said Taylor.
Because this intersection is a primary road, VDOT is in charge here. Traffic engineer Robert Vilak says there are no specific projects for this corridor right now, but the area is under constant observation.
He says that includes keeping an eye on traffic that flows from this intersection onto connecting roads.
Two people were killed in a crash a few blocks away last June, in front of the Seven Gables Apartment complex.
"We are repeatedly reviewing the current traffic signals out there to see if there are any upgrades needed," says Vilak.
Upgrades are already happening in western Henrico.
Brook and Parham ranked number five on the list with 34 accidents last year. Vilak says improvements to that area includes sidewalks, new traffic lights, turning lanes and a crosswalk.
In the Short Pump area, West Broad Street and Pouncey Tract road beat all intersections in the county with 47 crashes last year. To improve that number, engineers are studying traffic signals to see if there can be more time between a yellow and red light.
"These are actively managed corridors and we are continuing to review the signal timing," says Vilak.
Vilak says that's a study that could take a year to complete.
