Henrico woman escapes house fire

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A Henrico couple is hopeless after flames tore through their West End home. A gas leak only added to the trouble on Dover Hunt Place near Deep Run Park and Church Road.

This fire has also sparked some safety concerns among neighbors on the street.

As firefighters finished spraying down the home, neighbors spray painted caps to their gas lines. They want to make them more visible.

It took crews a long time to find Frank and Lisa Senger's gas line buried under dirt after their home caught on fire. Gas going into the home only fed the flames.

Neighbor Mike Zindorf was the first to see them just before 9:30 Sunday morning. "I was brushing my teeth and shaving and lookout and saw the flames," said Zindorf. He ran over to Lisa's home and banged on the front door.

"I just ran out of the house and I couldn't believe it," said Senger. She was the only person inside. Her husband was away on business.

"When I saw it go up when I came out, it was the scariest thing I've ever seen," Senger added.

Henrico Fire Captain James Mellon says the fire started on the outside near the panel box and driveway. It spread to the fence, and vehicles nearby - even threatening neighbors' homes.

"We had multiple things we were dealing with -  trying to knock the fire down, get the gas under control, and keep this from spreading from anyone else's property," said Capt. Mellon.

Crews got the fire out in about 20 minutes but had to call in the power company to turn off the gas.

"When we have gas that's feeding inside the house - inside that container - we start to make an explosive area and all it needs is an ignition source," Capt. Mellon added.

Senger just counts her blessings the flames never reached inside.

"It's amazing," Senger noted. "I have good friends who came over and people I work with. You know it's just nice to know that people care about you."

The Sengers still have a lot of water damage. Right now the couple is staying with friends until everything is fixed.
