Water to shut off in Northside Sunday afternoon - NBC12 - WWBT - Richmond, VA News On Your Side

Water scheduled to shut off in Northside for repairs

If you live and work in Richmond's northside, you may not have water Sunday afternoon. This means some businesses on a nearly mile-long stretch of Broad street will have to close their doors part Sunday.

That project will replace water valves along West Broad street between the Boulevard and 195.  Some lanes will also be blocked while crews work. The valves are more than 50-years old.

While crews tune up cars at Merchants Tire and Auto, city workers will be tuning up water valves along Broad street.  Tod Stuckey's shop will be in the middle of it all Sunday.

"It's a little inconvenience, but we deal with that everyday," said Stuckey.

Utility crews will begin replacing 12 valves on West Broad between the Boulevard and 195.  Some customers along those streets and north of broad will have no water starting at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The outage could last three to four hours.

"We're doing everything we can to store water and prepare for it to do as much as we can to make it as least invasive as possible and I'm just thanking god it's Sunday afternoon and not during the week," Stuckey added.

Sundays are one of the busiest days for Joy Garden Chinese Restaurant Owner Mark Sin. He doesn't open until noon - and will have to start preparing to close before two.

"Sunday lunch is pretty good," said Sin. "For dinner, we have a fair crowd and takeout business is very good, so we've pretty much lost a whole day's business."

Throughout the day, West Broad will be open, but drivers may see more break lights than usual. Portions of the left bound lanes will close each way.

It's a minor inconvenience Stuckey is willing to ride out, if that means long term benefits down the road.

"Anything they're doing to make the neighborhood and the city better," said Stuckey. "I'm all for it. We just spent $100,000 renewing this store. The last thing we want is to have permanent water issues due to lack of maintenance on the city's behalf."

The maintenance work should wrap up by 11:00 Sunday night. If you have any questions about the repairs, call: 311 and select the option "Water Emergency" for details.
