The person of interest in the shooting death of a Virginia College teacher has been found dead.
Police say Lloyd Edward Warren Jr. was located Thursday in a cemetery in Cumberland County. Warren was found inside a black Nissan Altima and police believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police were searching for Warren after Dr. Madalyn Carey was found with a gunshot wound inside a burning home. Investigators say Carey and Warren lived together.
Dr. Carey's family says this latest development brings some degree of closure.
"I can't say I have any kind of sympathy for him. My sister didn't deserve the way she died," said Marcus Carey. "She was tortured. She was burned. We can't even give her a proper burial."
Students and faculty held a vigil for the Virginia College instructor this week.
"She was my only sister," said Marcus. "My parents only daughter. It's just devastating."
Court documents show two different women lived in fear of Warren. The latest protective order was filed in Powhatan by an ex-girlfriend.
She writes the problems began with "a verbal altercation on the phone." When she got home, she says she smelled gasoline and called police, according to court documents.
She writes an "arson investigation took place. he had put gas on my blankets and pillows and... outside the home."
It ends with "I fear for myself and my kids."
"I'm glad that at some point we can kind of bring closure to the situation," said Marcus. "I really think he took the low road."
State Police are still investigating. Doctor Carey's family is planning to hold a memorial this Sunday. It is at 2: 00 p.m. at the Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Emporia.
