Henrico man saves elderly woman trapped in car covered by power lines

An elderly woman slammed into a power pole in Varina Tuesday afternoon. A local man going to check his mail sprang into action. He jumped into the car covered in live power lines.

"I heard a boom and the lights went out," said Henrico resident Stephen Garrett. "The car was on fire, and she was screaming."

Garrett walked us back to the location of the accident. Glass marks the spot where Stephen jumped inside the car covered in live power lines.

"It was actually making my hat stand up on my head...the static," said Stephen.

There was no time to think. Stephen's young son was just steps away attempting to slow down traffic.

"I told her if she goes," recalls Stephen. "I go."

Stephen says they prayed together as rescue crews waited for the electricity to be shut off. Stephen took life saving steps to calm down the victim.

"She would have been in a lot of trouble," said Stephen. "Her seatbelt had stopped her from breathing. If that would have been my mom or my grandmother I would expect the same thing to be done for me."

The elderly victim has not been identified, but Stephen says she is in stable condition.
