McDonald's employees topple would-be robber with gun

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It was startling Easter Sunday morning for employees at a South Richmond McDonald's on the 800 block of Hull Street.

Police say workers toppled Keith Henderson, 39, after he tried to hold-up the place at gunpoint.

Henderson is behind bars, charged with robbing the fast-food restaurant. That's thanks to some quick-thinking, and rather bold staff members.

Investigators say at about 6 a.m. Sunday, Henderson pulled a gun on workers behind the counter. He demanded money in a safe deposit bag from the manager. However, police say one employee whacked him in the head with a metal rod.

Customer, Matthew Noel, says he saw the police cars swarming the scene.

"At the time, there were about eight cop cars here," described Noel.

He says he spoke to witnesses inside the restaurant during the hold-up. "While the robber wasn't looking, (an employee) clobbered the guy in the back, and that's when (employees) overpowered (the robber)," continued Noel.

Police say employees struggled with the suspect, managing to grab his weapon. Investigators say workers then held Henderson in the basement until officers arrived.

In the meantime, regulars at the McDonalds describe the staff as very friendly.

"They do a good job, and they're honest," said customer Victor Humphery.

However, Marcus Seay, another customer, says his friends who work at the restaurant won't be easily taken advantage of.

"They don't take no mess, as you can see," said Seay. "They were really brave in there. I take my hat off to them."

Henderson was taken to VCU Medical Center with minor injuries. McDonald's has not issued a statement at this time.
