KAUFMAN COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Officials are investigating the death of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, who were both found dead in their home in Forney on Saturday.

According to WFAA in Dallas, McLelland and his wife Cynthia were found shot dead inside their home Saturday evening after the front door of the family home was found kicked in. Sources say that a .223-caliber rifle was used in the murder and approximately 14 rounds were fired.

At a press conference Sunday, officials added that this is an active investigation, but that they cannot confirm that this shooting is related to the shooting death of Mark Hasse, the former Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney who was shot dead in the parking lot of the Kaufman County Courthouse Annex building on January 31.

Officials did add that the shooting of the McLelland's does not appear to be random. Authorities are also increasing security at the courthouse, and taking precautionary measures to protect other elected officials in the county, and to ensure public safety within the county.

According to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, the Kaufman County Courthouse will be open for business on Monday. However, the District Attorney's Office will be closed.

According to the Kaufman County District Attorney's web site, McLelland attended Navarro Junior College and then transferred to the University of Texas. He spent 23 years in the United States Army. McLelland and his wife have two daughters and three sons. They had been married for 17 years.

The Kaufman County Crime Stoppers have set up a special tip line at 877-847-7522. If you have any information about this murder, please call or submit a tip online at www.kaufmancountycrimestoppers.org. Callers may remain anonymous.
