MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Free fertilizer

Posted: Updated:
POWHATAN, VA (WWBT) -

Many of us will soon be landscaping and planting gardens around our homes, and those new plants need fertilizer.

Stuart Moore bought property in Powhatan last year. He opened "Moore Country Stables," where he can board and train up to 12 horses.

"With the indoor arena, I knew that I could have a lot of activity and a great family-fun environment for horses and their owners," said Moore.

Eight horses call this place home.

"We feed a really nice quality of hay bales."

With that many horses comes a lot of byproduct.

"In the summertime, I'm lucky because I have beautiful green fields."

What the horses leave behind is rich in nutrients that slowly feed the soil.

"They do a lot of fertilizing for my fields."

But now, he's got too much.

"I feel like I need to get some of this off the property."

He bought a spreader which can apply the product to large properties.

"If you're close by, I'll be happy to bring it to your home and distribute it using the spreader for free."

The spreader flings fertilizer 20 feet up and out, so it needs to be a large property.

"As soon as the sun comes out, it will turn green very quickly."

Owners of smaller properties looking for a nutritional boost for plants can come here and get as much as they want for free.

Even a small amount goes a long way. I'm going to take this product, put it in an onion bag, tie it up like a tea bag, let it sit in a couple of gallons of water for 4-5 days. This way, I can feed my plants organically for the next few weeks - and it didn't cost me a dime.

"We only use sawdust for our bedding, so all you end up with is sawdust and manure, both of which are good, clean products and both great fertilizers."
