CAUGHT ON TAPE: Thieves try and break into Hopewell home

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) -

Two would-be thieves picked the wrong Hopewell home to rob when their attempted break-in was caught on camera.

Hopewell police have seen a rash of home break-ins in their area. Officers released images of the would-be crooks to catch them and see if the break-ins are connected.

The first suspect is described by police as a black male, 6'1", 150-165 pounds wearing blue jeans and a hoodie with white sneakers. The second suspect is described as a black male, 5'9", 170-180 pounds wearing dark colored jeans and a gray jacket.

The surveillance video shows the first suspect trying to open the patio door with no luck. Then, the second suspect helps his friend scope out the situation.

"It looks spur of the moment to me," said the homeowner, Martina. She didn't want to show her face or share her full name. "It's worrisome that two guys are walking by and spur of the moment think this is the thing to do."

Martina said the two suspects opened a gate to get to the rear of the house. They then used a baseball bat to smash the motion sensor lights.

According to the homeowners, the suspects then stood on top of an air conditioning unit and smashed the bathroom window.

The alarm system then went off and the men scattered. Minutes later, a Hopewell police officer is seen on camera.

Neither Martina nor her husband were home when the suspects tried to break in.

If you know anything about this crime or about any other break-ins in the Hopewell area, you're urged to call Crime Solvers 541-2202.
