Parents can weigh in on Henrico middle school GPA requirement

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Parents will have  a chance to discuss a plan to raise the GPA requirement for Henrico middle school athletes.

Parents can sound off Thursday night, during the school board meeting on Nine Mile Road.

The proposal would requiring middle school student athletes to have a 2.0 GPA starting this fall. If students don't make the grade, they'll first get a warning.

According to the rule, at sixth grade, kids will be notified about the GPA requirement to get them ready for the proposed rule. If grades come in lower than a 2.0 by 7th grade, students can only practice, and can't play until coaches see higher marks. Then by 8th grade, if things don't improve, kids can't play or practice.

The school board is having it's monthly meeting at the New Bridge auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

This coming school year would be a test period. Full enforcement would happen in 2014. Mandatory tutoring is also being considered to keep students off the bench.
