Chesterfield golden retriever put down, owner charged after attack

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield golden retriever has been put down and the owner faces charges after an attack sent a woman to the hospital.

Kim DeMaree is now back home after the attack left her with severe muscle damage in her arm.

"The whole time I was screaming, 'Oh my God!'" recalls Kim DeMaree. "I mean you see this stuff on television. It's just crazy."

Chesterfield animal control released a statement saying they decided to put the dog down after an investigation.

"We were prepared to pursue a vicious dog hearing, but the owner chose to sign the dog over to animal control," the statement read.

DeMaree was saddened to hear the dog was euthanized.

"Yes, I love dogs," said DeMaree who has a dog of her own. "I think the owner did something to make the dog do that."

The dog owner, Randy Browning, now faces charges for failing to get rabies shots for the dog and a current dog license.

"I feel sorry for her," said dog owner Randy Browning. "That dog is mean."

A dog license costs between $5.00 and $7.00. If you are caught without a dog license you could face a $250.00 fine.

"All dog bites are taken seriously," said Rob Leinberger with animal control. "I think more people are familiar with the rabies vaccination because rabies is a scary disease. The dog license...probably not so much, but it is important. You have to have it."
