Shaka Smart is not leaving VCU to go to UCLA, Minnesota or any other school for that matter. Smart has agreed to a contract extension and restructured agreement and will remain at VCU.
"Coach Smart has demonstrated through this process that he is loyal to VCU and his greatest concern lies with our program moving forward every year," said VCU Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin in a university-released statement. "Our goal was to present him with a revised agreement proactively rather than wait for another institution to step in with an offer. I believe we accomplished our goal," McLaughlin said.
While details are being finalized, the deal reportedly is worth $1.5 million annually through 2023, a slight raise from the $1.36 million he was making this season. Smart's main focus with this deal was improvements to the program and increased salaries for his staff.
This marks the third straight season that Smart has turned down jobs in high profile conferences to remain in Richmond. He turned down NC State's offer following the Rams' Final Four run in 2011, and Illinois after last season.
Smart has compiled a 111-37 record in four seasons, and has led VCU to three straight NCAA Tournaments.
