HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of police K-9 "Ranger."

The three and a half year old German Shepherd passed away Saturday from a terminal illness.

"Our K-9s are a special part of our law enforcement family who faithfully serve alongside us every day," said Colonel David R. Hines, Sheriff. "We are saddened by his loss and grieve with Deputy Bokor who shared a special bond with Ranger."

Ranger was assigned to Deputy Ben Bokor in March 2011 and worked in the Patrol Division, where they made several successful finds to help investigations.

Deputy Bokor remained at Ranger's side until his passing.
