Murders and other violent crimes rose in Henrico County in 2012, increasing the county's crime rate.
Murders increased by three last year, leading to a total of 12 cases in 2012. One in four murders had ties to domestic violence. Aggravated assaults increased by 38 to 189, a figure Middleton said indicates problems within the community.
The category of aggravated assaults encompasses incidents when suspects cause serious bodily harm.
Fairfield totaled the highest number of offenses with 2,666. Eastern Varina ranked second highest, while Western Tuckahoe was ranked the safest area in Henrico County.
Henrico Police Chief Douglas Middleton said at a presentation to county supervisors Tuesday night that spillover crime from neighboring Richmond is part of the reason why Fairfield tops the list for Henrico crime.
Robberies, rape and burglaries all decreased, and the current crime rate is nearly half the peak seen in 1999.
